Transport Modes by Carbon Dioxide Emissions per Person and Km
This is a list of the common transport modes by carbon dioxide emissions per person and km. Thought there are many different factors that can vary, the table is based on comparisons of estimates from EIA, EPA and EEA. Average loading is assumed for each mode.
As the list reveals, train is by far the most energy efficient transport mode of the common used. Transport by large car contributes to larger carbon emissions than flying in many cases. To reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport in the future, transport by train and boat will likely increase in importance. These two transport modes together stands for less than 3 % of worlds global transport emissions despite widespread use (Wikilists list of transport Modes by Energy Use).
